The 2010 Pangnirtung Print Collection, released on November 26th 2010, is considerably different from past collections. Much of the work resulted from six professional development workshops offered at the Uqqurmiut Centre for Arts and Crafts in Pangnirtung from September 2009 through March 2010. Pangnirtung has one of four print shops in the Canadian Arctic, along with Baker Lake, Cape Dorset, and Holman Island, each with its own unique characteristics. While this Collection is a departure from past ones, the work still reflects the special style of Pangnirtung artists.

The 2010 Collection is dedicated to the memory of Lypa Pitsiulak, a contributor to the collection since its inception in the early seventies, who died on August 24 this year. Lypa Pitsiulak embodied the intent of the Uqqurmiut workshops, which emphasized individual artistic growth and expression.

". I draw what I have done. It seems to be all right to draw something even if it looks sad, as long as it has actually happened. I have heard that all my drawings should look happy. I draw what I have gone through in my life, not just happiness" (Pitsiulak in Latocki 1983:13). Excerpt from Inuit Art Alive.

Participants in the 2010 Collection include stalwarts of the studio (Andrew Qappik, Elisapee Ishulutaq, Geela Sowdluapik, Jolly Atagoyuk, Josea Maniapik and Towkie Karpik) and artists new to two-dimensional art such as Piona Keyuakjuk, Joanasie Papatsie, Jamasie Mike, Salamonie Kanayuk, and Eena Angmarlik.

Some of the images, such as Andrew's classic mother and child imagery and the bears which have become his trademark, will be familiar. Others, however, might jolt the expectations of the usual Pangnirtung print collectors or even be viewed as shocking. These images stem from the artists' very personal and real experiences.

The Collection, which will include some 30 images ranging in size from miniatures to 56 cm 76 cm, will be available in those galleries traditionally carrying Inuit art and can be viewed online at www.uqqurmiut.com.
